Comment Spam Update

It has now been ten days since I started my comment spam fight. For those who care, let me give you a little bit of background on this.

After being flooded with comment spam (two the point where I had more than 2,000 spam comments in my comment table), I began blocking the IP ranges coming from certain ISPs. I found that the overwhelming majority of comment spam came from an ISP in Amsterdam and one in Australia. (For a list of IP ranges I am blocking in my .htaccess file, click here.)

I’m pleased to report that in the last three days, I have received exactly ONE spam comment. While that list of blocked IP ranges looks rather large, with the exception of one or two, they are all registered to these two companies:

RIPE Network Coordination Centre
P.O. Box 10096
Amsterdam, NL 1001EB

Asia Pacific Network Information Centre
PO Box 2131
Milton, QLD, AU 4064

If nobody in Amsterdam and Australia can reach my blog, I consider that a small price to pay for not having to sift through hundreds of bogus comments for online poker, Viagra, and lesbian porn (not that I have anything against any of those things, but my comment form is not the place to advertise them.)
